Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) – new and amended services

This page provides information on the new MBS item for TAVI low surgical risk and amendments to current MBS items for TAVI intermediate and high surgical risk to reflect the new low surgical risk service.

Effective 1 July 2022, one new MBS item (38522) will be introduced for TAVI for patients with symptomatic severe native calcific aortic stenosis at low risk for open surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR), device agnostic.

Two MBS items (38495 and 38514) will be amended for TAVI for patients with symptomatic severe aortic stenosis at high or intermediate risk for open SAVR to reflect the new low surgical risk MBS item. These changes are the result of recommendations by the Medical Services Advisory Committee and was approved by Government for funding on the MBS in the 2022-23 Budget.
