This page provides information about the 1 November 2022 listing of seven new MBS items and changes to existing MBS items for melanoma excision services

Page last updated: 24 October 2022

From 1 November 2022, seven new Medicare Benefit Schedule (MBS) items (items 31377, 31378, 31379, 31380, 31381, 31382 and 31383) will be created for clinically suspected melanoma and amendments will be made to the item descriptors for the existing definitive excision (items 31371, 31372, 31373, 31374, 31375 and 31376), to resolve confusion around the claiming of melanoma excision services.

These new MBS items will benefit providers by being able to claim one of the seven new MBS items for clinically suspected melanoma services in the first instance, pending histological confirmation of malignancy. Once malignancy is confirmed the provider would then perform a wide excision and claim an existing definitive excision item.
