Current Update
On 11 March 2020, the Prime Minister, the Hon. Scott Morrison MP, announced a $2.4 Billion health plan to fight COVID-19 to protect all Australians, including vulnerable groups such as the elderly, those with chronic conditions and Indigenous communities, from the coronavirus (COVID-19).

The new services commence from 13 March 2020. For details visit the March 2020 Latest News page.

The new items will be included on MBS Online by early on Friday 20 March 2020 and the new item explanatory notes will be included on MBS Online early in the week 23 March 2020. The new March 2020 MBS Book files (PDF, DOC and ZIP) will be available to download in late March.

The previous update to the XML, on 13 March 2020, included the telehealth and phone consultations services for specialists, nurse practitioners, mental health practitioners.

The new update to the XML, on 19 March 2020, includes the following:
    17 March 2020
On 17 March 2020, it was confirmed that item 69485 may be claimed as a stand-alone test. Testing for SARS-CoV-2 in conjunction with other respiratory viruses will be left to the discretion of the patient’s medical practitioner or pathologist. Item 69485 is not required to be provided in conjunction with a test described in items 69494, 69495 or 69496.

On 17 March 2020, it was confirmed that for telehealth and telephone services provided by GPs, other medical practitioners and nurse practitioners, a new level A consultation is included (claimable from 13 March 2020).
    16 March 2020
On 16 March 2020, it was confirmed that certain services provided by obstetricians and midwives are included (claimable from 13 March 2020).

The 'usual GP' was expanded to include where there has been a face to face attendance in the previous 12 months with the practitioner or at the practice. The 'need for a limited examination' was removed from the GP and Other Medical Practitioner items.
There are also new bulk-billed video-conference items for GP and other doctors working in general practice to continue to provide certain health services to their patients during the period of their isolation. Allied health providers with appropriate mental health training who are in isolation for possible COVID-19 infection will also be able to continue to provide mental health services to their patients during the period of their isolation.
