From 1 January 2010, proponents of all new MBS items that do not undergo an assessment through the Medical Services Advisory Committee (MSAC) and amendments to existing MBS items will be required to provide detailed information regarding the proposed service and its evidence base.
The process for applying for MBS listing can be done by either:
1) directly submitting an application to MSAC or the Quality Framework for assessment; or
2) submitting an Initial Assessment Application Form to determine the appropriate assessment pathway.
Applicants are encouraged to contact either the MSAC Secretariat or the Quality Framework Task Group for a preliminary discussion about the application process prior to submitting an application.
If applicants choose to apply to either MSAC or the MBS Quality Framework directly, the Department reserves the right to redirect the application if it disagrees with their assessment and this will entail the need to submit a new application.
Further information including the initial assessment form can be found at www.health.gov.au/mbrtg
