Changes to emergency medicine services
· What? The changes include a revised structure to replace existing emergency medicine attendance items with a new base attendance item structure. New emergency medicine therapeutic and procedural add-on items will be introduced to be claimed in conjunction with the new base attendance items.
· Why? MBS items for emergency medicine services will be changing to ensure that services are clinically appropriate, encourage best practice, support patient care and safety and simplify the MBS.
o The revised structure contains 18 new attendance items in Group A21, 18 new procedural items in new subgroup 14 in Group T1 and deletes 11 items in Group A21.
· Who? These changes will affect emergency medicine specialists and other medical practitioners who carry out emergency medicine services, consumers claiming these services and private hospitals.
· When? The changes to emergency medicine services will be effective from 1 March 2020. These changes are subject to legislative process.
